Isala investigates allegations of bribing cardiologists

Hospital Isala in Zwolle has again investigated the purchase of medical supplies. The reason is the suspicion that cardiologists from the hospital have been bribed to place heart implants from a German company in patients.

The Isala says it knows nothing about the German company, Biotronik, or about the amounts that the cardiologists would have received. Because of the suspicions, KPMG has to investigate the way in which items are purchased.

“Such an investigation has taken place before. At the time, no specifics came to light. In the light of the Public Prosecution Service investigation, you can look at it differently. That is why we are conducting another investigation,” said the hospital in Zwolle.

According to NRC and Der Spiegel, the hospital’s cardiologists together received 3.2 million euros in benefits in recent years. At the end of June, de Volkskrant reported that at least five (former) employees of Isala’s specialist department are suspected of taking bribes, and two cardiologists were suspended.

The two cardiologists work for the Isala Medical Specialist Company, which is active at several Isala locations. The hospital umbrella did not say before whether they are also active in Meppel.
