Burgemeester van Sint-Joost-ten-Node Emir Kir (PS), former parliamentary leader and minister Eric Van Rompuy (cd&v) and academicus and former parliamentary leader Francis Delpérée (cdh). It has since been decorated in the Order of Leopold II, among three major national orders, on the Order of Leopold and the Order of the Crown.
The Order of Leopold II was established in 1900 in Het Leven as a colonial, civil order. Are de onafhankelijkheid van Congo in 1960 is het een van de ridderordes van ons land. Groen puts the bestaan van die Orde nu ter discussie. “The Orde van Leopold II is a result of the colonial period,” says Kamerlid Wouter De Vriendt (Groen), who asked for the bijzondere Kamercommissie over the colonial period. “Dat merited Belgen een symbolische Eretitel krijgen, daar is niets mis mee. Maar het done van bad smaak om een eretitel te geven met de naam van een staatshofd die en gruwelbewind heeft gevoerd. This will be discussed in the parliamentary committee.”
King Leopold II died in 1885 and 1908 on the home of the Congo-Vrijstaat, which was personal. Miljoenen Congolezen stierven onder zijn gewelddadig, colonial wind.
Also the date of launching that year, on June 30th, is the result of De Vriendt hoogst ongelukkig. Daarmee value de uitreiking always same with de onafhankelijkheid van Congo. “It is a roundabout case in point in the case of the self-assessment of the Congolese nationality”, says De Vriendt.
Het is not the first keer dat de Orde van Leopold II ter discussie state. Previously, Nora Bertels refused, shared with Duffel (Groen), the title. Frank Albers, professor Engelse literatuur (UAtwerpen) deed hetzelfde in 2020. “‘Commandeur in de Orde van Leopold II’ is helemaal geen eretitel, het is een accused”, writes Albers destijds in een opinie in The standard. “Ik vind het heel jammer dat mijn tekst destijds niets heeft uitgehaald”, says hij. “Het is good dat groen dit ter discussie stelt.”
Dat we are grandchildren jaren stilstaan bij de figure van Leopold II vindt politicologe en auteur van het book Dochter van de colonization Nadia Nsayi goed. “Maar we focussen wel erg sterk op die ne figure waardoor we other actors vergeten. It is not that Leopold II avenues. Net soals de Orde van Leopold II ter discussie staat, zou hetzelfde moeten voor bijvoorbeeld de Francqui-prijs voor academici (Emile Francqui was een academicus, otherwise in military the door Leopold II to Congo will be zoned om te vecht in de Belgo-Arabische Oorlog, PG).”
