Is the immersive “Frida Kahlo” show worth seeing?

Transformed into a genre in itself, lthe immersive audiovisual samples They are a trend in the world and Argentina is no exception in terms of the enthusiasm they arouse. With a sensory approach, the public perceives the works of renowned modern and contemporary artists amalgamated, thanks to technology, in a great global exhibition of the creator.

Last year the show “Imagine Van Gogh” summoned more than 150,000 visitors. Around the world, stalls dedicated to Klimt, Monet, Goya and Renoir achieved similar results. These experiences are the product of the sum of several technologies: mapping, virtual reality, augmented reality and animation. The use of these resources, in these shows, aims to strengthen the link between arts and entertainment.

The impact of these experiences on the viewer is such that many groups of artists already think about their exhibitions in these new formats. And, although immersion has many detractors, there are also those who defend the economic possibilities offered by this renewed way of seeing art.

In principle, these proposals do not require the classic space of the museum, because they are carried out in establishments for large events and shows, with a considerable area. For example, in Buenos Aires, the Convention Center and La Rural were the chosen places of exhibition.

intimate frida

“Life and Work of Frida Kahlo”, which has been taking place since January 20 at the Buenos Aires Convention Center (Av. Figueroa Alcorta 2099), invites visitors to rediscover the Mexican painter through her multiple facets: as a woman, creator and as part of the climate intellectual of the time. To achieve this, more than a hundred plastic, literary and photographic works received an animated form, fusing art and narrative.

Probably, the fundamental factor on which the idea of the exhibition is based is found in the writing of Frida Kahlo. The intimate diary, the fragments of which can be seen on the tour, are the script for the visual course of the exhibition. A journey into the mind and heart of the artist and the deepest and most impressive moments of her life.

At the entrance to the exhibition, for example, a couch with a tilted mirror on top is installed. This object was part of the method that the artist used to make her famous self-portraits when she was immobilized. A physical condition that accompanied her throughout her life, despite successive surgeries.

Frida Kahlo exhibition

“The exhibition seeks to highlight what is different, to highlight Frida as a writer, painter and intellectual of her time, an avant-garde character and a successful woman. This is achieved through her diary, the central axis of our exhibition because she presents it in a very intimate way and invites the visitor to that particular universe. It allows us to understand it better, from an emotional perspective”, he explains. Carla Prat, Artistic Director of the event.

The exhibition arrives in Argentina after the success obtained in Spain, where more than 100,000 visitors saw it. Through the use of technology, the main works of the artist are brought together, so the exhibition also serves to learn about a large part of her work, today scattered in different museums around the world. The tour lasts approximately one hour.

The exhibition also contains archival film images, family photographs and fragments of their texts. “The curatorship has a very important narrative axis with a great investigation of experts behind it -explains Prat-. It does not follow a linear story, nor a historical chronology, but rather an emotional journey, a criterion that has guided the selection of the works. The music and the images have been worked on in parallel, which is why the show is so integrated and emotional. The audiovisuals seek to place the visitor at the center of his work”.

The romantic link with the muralist Diego Rivera and the camaraderie with the artists of his period is central to the exhibition. This passionate relationship between the painter and Frida is developed in a remarkable sequence of the show, based on the words written by the artist. “Frida did not paint her dreams but her own reality,” concludes the curator.

Conceived as an exhibition for all audiences, Frida’s immersive experience draws with thick lines the central knots of her work and its conflicts. As an educational walk and introduction to her universe, the proposal is well worth diving into.
