Marco Rose has a difficult time at BVB after the 2: 4 in the Europa League at the latest. Does the coach have to leave early?
By Jonas Ortmann and Sebastian Kolsberger
The next full embarrassment for Borussia Dortmund! A week after the 2: 5 debacle against Leverkusen, BVB and head coach Marco Rose (45) caught a 2: 4 pack in the Europa League against Glasgow Rangers.
The goal of the bosses (Europa League title) is as good as missed after the first leg.
What happens now?
► Will Terzic replace Rose after all?
Last week BILD asked: “How long can Rose lose SO?” This season there were against Ajax Amsterdam (0: 4 and 1: 3), at Sporting in Lisbon (1: 3) or in the cup at second division St. Pauli (1:2) already too many embarrassments.
The declaration of bankruptcy against the Scots club raises doubts about coach Marco Rose (“I think I can still reach the boys”). Rose has already lost twelve (!) games with BVB (36%).
Pre-predecessor Lucien Favre was thrown out after a 1: 5 against Stuttgart 14 months ago. Assistant coach Edin Terzic (39), a Dortmund boy, took over at the time and, after initial difficulties, led the Pott-Klub into the Champions League and won the trophy. He then moved back into the second row, taking over the post of Technical Director.
Now some fans are calling for his return.
After the Rangers disaster, “Sky” reported that there was a crisis meeting with BVB bosses Watzke, Zorc, Kehl and coach Rose on Thursday evening. However, there was no meeting of the bosses in the evening.
BILD knows: Despite renewed embarrassment, Marco Rose’s bosses are convinced. Above all, you measure him against the Champions League qualification in the league. With Rose, the necessary upheaval should come in the summer.
The bosses have recognized: The changeover to the required attack football needs time – and new staff! But if the premier class shakes in the league (doesn’t look like it at the moment) – or there is another disaster against Rose’s former club Gladbach on Sunday, things can get tight.
► Has Haaland already completed?
Erling Haaland (21) sat next to family friend Ivar Eggja with a “Whatever” cap (“Whatever”) in the box on Thursday evening and waved it off at 1: 3.
One thing is clear: the injured TORweger definitely wants to get back on the pitch. But that won’t happen as quickly as all BVB fans hope.
The Rose sentences at the press conference about Haaland made people sit up and take notice: “Erling took part in small parts of the team training yesterday. The fact is: he was out for a long time. It’s a bit of a persistent story.”
The superstar tore a muscle fiber before the league break in Hoffenheim almost four weeks ago. For a long time, BVB said it was nothing bad.
Haaland is fighting for his comeback and had his private physio and miracle healer John Haddad flown in for the rehab. But now even the second leg in Glasgow could shake in a week.
► Is Süle enough to stabilize this defense?
Hardly likely! The facts: The team has already swallowed 56 goals in 33 competitive games this season. 1.6 goals conceded per game – the value of a relegation candidate!
Against Glasgow, the weaknesses in defense were once again blatant: Hummels (BILD-Rating 6) in this form is not a defensive leader, on the flank Guerreiro (BILD-Rating 6) is completely overwhelmed! After his long injuries, Zagadou seems to be struggling more with himself than helping BVB (BILD note 6). Akanji, one of the few bright spots in Dortmund’s wobbly defense, also went under and had to leave injured after 55 minutes. Even substitute winter sales candidate Schulz could not provide any arguments for more playing time.
Good: After Süle’s commitment, BVB also has Freiburg’s Nico Schlotterbeck on the slip. BVB speaks to Ajax right-back Mazraoui.
► Must Hazard leave after next summer demotion?
Removed from the squad at Union, not even substituted on again against Glasgow! Coach Rose even preferred Thorgan Hazard (28) to Real-Flop Reinier in the disaster game. The next clear sign in the direction of the Belgian, who obviously has a very difficult time after a poor training performance. His contract runs until 2024 (earning around 5 million). So the signs point to separation…
► What gives hope against Gladbach?
BVB’s rollercoaster season has at least shown one thing: At Borussia there are just as many outliers this season. After the Leverkusen debacle, Rose’s team showed a reaction at Union, winning 3-0. And: It can’t get any worse than against Glasgow on Sunday…
