The Formula 1 jury has sentenced four drivers to penalties for qualifying at the Canadian GP. Nico Hulkenberg, Carlos Sainz, Lance Stroll and Yuki Tsunoda have to start the competition from a place three squares worse.
Nico Hülkenberg was somewhat surprisingly second in qualifying, but the penalty dropped him to fifth place on the starting list. The penalty clicked for Hülkenberg because the driver did not follow the speed limit during the red flag.
With Hülkenber’s penalty Fernando Alonso rises to the front row, and the Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and George Russell starting from positions three and four.
Eighth-placed Carlos Sainz drops to 11th place on the starting grid. Sainz was deemed to have blocked Pierre Gasly while he is on a fast lap. Gasly stayed in the first part of qualifying.
Yuki Tsunoda drops from 16th place to 19th place because the Japanese crash prevented Hülkenberg’s fast lap. Lance Stroll, on the other hand, received a penalty after blocking someone on a fast lap Esteban Oconia. Stroll drops from box 13 to box 16 due to the penalty.
With Stroll’s punishment Valtteri Bottas the position on the starting grid improved by one place. The Finnish rider starts the race from 14th place. The pole position of the GP was driven by the World Series leader Max Verstappen.
