What risks do Mediterranean forests face (they are not yet mature)?
Large fires
That hundreds of hectares are burned does not mean no serious obstacles to biodiversity. Furthermore, in some cases, the fire can favor the presence of certain species. The problem is the risk to people. And young forests put some inhabited areas at risk. Therefore, scientists and local officials agree on the need for management.
Droughts
Extreme droughts, like serious fireshinder the maturation and natural process of some forests, which are affected by sudden deaths.
Difficult bioeconomy
Another obstacle: extracting wood from these young, dense forests does not give a great economic benefit. Therefore, management is a problem for the owners (mostly private).
Biodiversity loss
The scarcity of mature forests makes the conservation of several species difficult. Since the richness of species (of all types) is usually concentrated in the heterogeneous habitats. The European Union, if the Nature Restoration Law is approved and nothing goes wrong, will force the preservation of these species.
