Is it forbidden to feed ducks in Zoetermeer?

As a child you probably often walked to the ditch with a bag of bread crusts to feed ducks. Today, this is banned in some regions. What about our own Zoetermeer? We figured it out!

To feed ducks or not

On the website of the municipality we can read that it is undesirable to feed ducks, because this nuisance of rats can cause. But is feeding ducks really forbidden? The municipality gave us a detailed response about the situation. “Feeding birds or animals is not prohibited in Zoetermeer. An article (2:44) has been included in the General Local Regulation (APV) of the municipality of Zoetermeer, but the Municipal Executive has not designated any places where the ban would apply. Okay, so it’s not banned.

Feeding Guidelines

However, the municipality gave clear instructions about feeding. ”When you want to feed (water) birds, it is recommended not to feed more than the birds can actually eat immediately, so that no food remains are left behind. These remains can be a food source for, for example, rats. It is also important that the animals are fed with products that are suitable for them. For example, small amounts of grains, seeds, dried insects, raw vegetables and fruit. Feeding leftovers of prepared food and bread is not recommended because it does not contain the right nutrients, but does provide stomach filling.” Obviously, keep your bread crusts with you!

Rat buffet

It becomes clear in both the response from the municipality and on the website of the municipality of Zoetermeer that food residues left behind are not desirable. So make sure you don’t leave any food in the grass, in the ditch or on the water’s edge. If there is too much left behind, it will mainly be the rats that enjoy this. They can then cause nuisance to other animals or to ourselves. So: enjoy, but feed in moderation!
