Terminal 2 at BER Airport was completed on September 25, 2020. It goes into operation on Thursday – 545 days later. What takes a long time finally flies well!
Flight FR 177 of the low-cost airline Ryanair is scheduled to take off for London Stansted at 2 p.m. Passengers will be processed in T2 for the first time. The 200 million euro project was the flagship building of the airport makers.
Although the costs had doubled, the schedule of two years was adhered to. The reason for the late start-up is the low number of passengers during the corona pandemic. So far, the operation has not paid off.
Airport boss Aletta von Massenbach (will be 53 at the opening on March 23) invited on Thursday to a tour of the 240 meter long and 40 meter wide additional terminal.
“The T2 is part of our preparation for the normalization of air traffic,” she said. “We expect 17 million passengers for 2022.” The airport company is not targeting the pre-crisis level of 36 million passengers until 2025.
At 19 baggage check machines, passengers can print out the labels for their suitcases and then hand them in. At eight controls, security staff process up to three travelers at the same time.

Initially, only Ryanair departures will be handled in the new building. From April, passengers from other airlines will also arrive.
T2 is located a few meters from the main Terminal 1. Passengers should find out in advance where their aircraft will be handled.
