While Eintracht Frankfurt, despite a few negative outliers, can look forward to a thoroughly satisfactory season so far, disillusionment is likely to be the trump card at VfL Wolfsburg. The direct meeting between the two teams on the coming matchday of the German Bundesliga is therefore a duel of opposites.

After the spectacular 4-3 win against 1. FC Köln on the last Bundesliga matchday, Eintracht Frankfurt is in sixth place and is still within striking distance of the Champions League places, from which the SGE are only separated by two points.

Qualifying for the premier European football league will likely remain a dream for VfL Wolfsburg in 2025/26 – that already seems clear after just eleven match days.

The Wolves only collected eight points on the first eleven matchdays and are therefore looking at the weakest interim balance in their Bundesliga history. Glimmer of hope: In 2002/03 and 2016/17 it was only one point more and they still stayed in class. In 2016/17, however, they had to take the detour via relegation (1:0/1:0 against Braunschweig).

However, the current result remains devastating: Wolfsburg lost seven of the last eight league games – and the 2009 champions were eliminated against Holstein Kiel in the DFB Cup during this period (0-1). Only FC St. Pauli (0) scored fewer points than VfL (3) in the last eight matchdays.

The fact that you are now competing against one of the players of the hour is unlikely to increase the chances of an end to Wolfsburg’s misery. Frankfurt’s Jonathan Burkardt scored his third brace of this Bundesliga season last matchday and is the league’s second-best goalscorer with eight goals behind Harry Kane (14). Since the start of the preseason, only Harry Kane has scored more multiples in the Bundesliga (10) than the German international (7).

Further facts about the game Eintracht Frankfurt vs. VfL Wolfsburg:

  • While the overall record clearly speaks in favor of the Wolves (23W 18D 11L), the SGE has not lost in the last 3 matches (1W 2D). Most recently there was a 1-1 draw in Frankfurt, in which Can Uzun equalized after an own goal from Tuta.
  • Top preparer: Farès Chaïbi scored a goal for the 6th time last matchday, making him the best assist provider in the league along with Bayern’s Michael Olise. This means that Chaïbi’s account already has twice as many assists as in the entire previous season of the Bundesliga (3 in 26 games).
  • The 18-year-old Jan Bürger from Wolfsburg celebrated his premiere in the upper house last Saturday. He came on for Sael Kumbedi in the 84th minute and was already a regular in the Wolves’ U19 team under interim coach Daniel Bauer.
  • Jesper Lindström, a former Frankfurt player, has been playing at VfL Wolfsburg since this summer. Lindström, who is on loan from SSC Napoli, wore the SGE jersey between 2021 and 2023 and played the most games of his career for Frankfurt (80 games, 14 goals).
