Triathlete Anne Haug and the Ironman in Hawaii – that’s a story with many chapters. So far, the island has always been nice to her, says the Bayreuth native. But she also knows: “The Hawaiian gods have to have mercy on you.”
You never really catch Anne Haug in a bad mood. The 40-year-old from Bayreuth is always happy and radiates joy in her sport – despite all the pain that comes with an Ironman triathlon. This weekend, the winner of the Bavarian Sports Prize and 2019 Hawaii winner will take part in the most important and toughest competition for triathletes on the volcanic island for the umpteenth time. And she still feels nervous.
Anne Haug: Previous successes “no guarantee”
She was “super nervous,” she told BR24Sport. Every race in Hawaii is different. “You don’t know beforehand whether you’ll get through or you won’t get through.” She already seems to be doing so. The Upper Franconian is in top form and has already celebrated three wins and two second places this season. And this time too she’s hoping for a good race: “The island has always been nice to me, has always given me a medal, but as I said, that’s no guarantee. Every race starts from scratch.”
“Everything has to be perfect for the World Cup title”
Haug knows the feeling of winning the world title in Hawaii. She achieved this in 2019, and a year ago she was a strong third-place finisher. And this time? “To win a World Cup, there just has to be a bit of luck. Everything has to be perfect. You can’t force that,” she says and adds with a laugh: “The Hawaiian gods have to have mercy on you that day. “
