Irene Schouten also takes the national title at 5000 meters

Irene Schouten from Hoogkarspel has also won the Dutch title in the 5000 meters. She did this in a time of 6.49.89 and it was the fourth time for the North Holland woman to win this title. Yesterday Schouten already managed to win gold in the 3000 meters.

In a packed Thialf, Joy Beune came second and Sanne in ‘t Hof third. You can call the 5000 meters a North Holland distance, because there were a lot of North Hollanders in the top ten: Merel Conijn (6th), Robin Groot (7th), Esther Kiel (8th), Bente Kerkhoff (9th) and Esmee Fisherman (10th).

Schouten beat teammate Marijke Groenewoud in her ride. He could not keep up with the pace of the Olympic champion and finished fourth with 6.56.80. After the race she was not entirely satisfied with her performance. “Winning the match gives a good feeling, but it was so difficult. Still, I have to be very happy with this title,” said Schouten.

Schouten indicated yesterday that she rode this National Championship with new shoes. The North Holland rider said that she will see in the coming weeks whether she will continue to ride on the new material.
