Since the end of September, selected iPhones have been supplied with the iOS 17 operating system. In addition to some innovations, there were also numerous shortcomings. Apple is therefore now taking a different approach than usual and stopping the development of iOS 18.
iOS 17 is currently Apple’s latest iPhone operating system. Normally, work on the future OS begins immediately after the release. But since the release of iOS 17, defects and errors have caused problems for users. The development of iOS 18 has therefore been stopped for the time being, but the future iOS version is expected to bring exciting innovations.
That’s why iOS 18 was stopped
Interruptions in operating system development work are quite rare at Apple. This was apparently last the case in 2019 and is currently the case with iOS 18 (as well as iPadOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11). Like Mark Gurman in his “Power On”Newsletter writes, Craig Federighi, head of software development at Apple, ordered a halt – albeit for a limited time.
Accordingly, the developers should first fix the errors and defects in iOS 17 and prevent future or possible errors. According to Gurman, a development stop for the new Apple software is planned for a week.
This is what iPhone users can expect with iOS 18
After the release of iOS 17, there were many dissatisfied users. Among other things, it was about nightly restarts and overheating problems. In addition to defects, there were also innovations. For example, iOS 17.2 introduced a completely new app.
However, the last update (versions) were not groundbreaking. Gurman writes: “Apple also faces a more daunting task with its 2024 software. After a few years of modest updates to iOS, the next version of iPhone and iPad software could be relatively groundbreaking.”

Apple is therefore planning to step up its game in the area of generative AI and connect to Google and OpenAI. The voice assistant Siri could get a big update. There is also talk of a new design. Internally, Apple described the new operating system as “ambitious and convincing”.
When is iOS 18 coming?
Since no major changes are expected with the iPhone 16 – or rather the hardware -, the focus is on iOS 18. After the ordered one-week stop, work on iOS 18 should continue. As usual, the first beta of the operating system will be presented for the first time at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2024 (WWDC, expected in June). Delivery of the iPhone OS could begin in September.
