iOS 15.5: What’s new in the iPhone update

Apple has released an update for its iPhones and iPads. iOS 15.5 and iPadOS 15.5 bring some new features and bug fixes. TECHBOOK has the details.

In just a few months, we expect iOS 16, the next major firmware leap from Apple. Until then, the manufacturer will provide its iPhones and iPads with minor updates. One of them is iOS 15.5, which is available for download now. But what innovations does Apple deliver with the new firmware and should the update be installed?

With iOS 15.4 there were some new features for users. These include, for example, an improvement to Face ID, with which the iPhone can now also be unlocked with a mask. There are significantly fewer innovations in iOS 15.5, because with the update Apple mainly delivers bug fixes and improves system stability.

Adjustments within the podcast app and Smart Home

iOS 15.5 brings minor updates for music fans. Managing downloaded episodes just got easier in the podcast app. Previously, subscribed podcasts could quickly take up a lot of memory. The app now limits the number of podcasts saved and automatically deletes old episodes if desired. The use of Homekit has also been optimized. Specifically, Apple fixed an issue with iOS 15.5 that could cause smart home automation to fail when people enter or exit the home.

Another minor innovation in iOS 15.5 concerns Apple Cash, which is not available in Germany. Here, Apple has simplified the process of requesting and sending money using the Apple Cash card in the Wallet app.

iOS 15.5 closes various security gaps

Above all, the installation of iOS 15.5 is not worthwhile because of the – admittedly somewhat economical – new functions, but because of the smaller optimizations in the system and the included security patches. Overall, the current iPhone update includes almost 30 fixes for various security issues.

The update to iOS 15.5 is officially available for download today and should appear automatically on the iPhone. If not, users can also search for it in the settings under “General” and “Software update”. It is advisable to back up the data before downloading and installing.
