The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee wants to withdraw recognition from the World Boxing Association (IBA). The IOC session must decide on this.

This was announced by the IOC board after an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday (June 7th, 2023). The basis is an internal IOC report. It found that the IBA had failed to meet the conditions set by the IOC. The International Boxing Association (IBA) has been suspended from the IOC since 2019.

The board called an extraordinary IOC session for June 22 to decide on the revocation. According to the IOC, the meeting is planned as a video conference.

Boxing will no longer be an Olympic sport from 2028

The IOC justified the suspension with, among other things, the association’s leadership, a lack of financial transparency and a lack of integrity in the arbitration processes. The IBA responded that it firmly believes that it meets all the necessary criteria to be part of the Olympic movement. The IBA had previously tried to dispel the IOC’s concerns with a 400-page report.

As a consequence, the IOC removed boxing from the Olympic program for the 2028 games in Los Angeles. The qualification for Paris 2024 and the Olympic fights are in the hands of a task force set up by the IOC – as was the case at the Tokyo Olympics.

competition association founded

A number of national federations have set up a competitive federation called World Boxing, which is due to be officially established in November. In response, the IBA suspended the German Boxing Association (DBV) as well as New Zealand, Sweden and the Netherlands. Switzerland had also left the IBA and joined World Boxing.
