The International Olympic Committee opens the door for the re-admission of athletes from Russia. The DOSB still rejects this, but wants to accept the recommendation.
The German Olympic Sports Confederation continues to reject the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus in international competitions, but is not considering a boycott of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in the event of a complete return of athletes from both countries to the sports stage.
“A German team will start, but we rule out a boycott for fundamental reasons.”DOSB President Thomas Weikert said in an interview with the newspapers of the Funke media group on Monday evening (03/27/23).
The International Olympic Committee did not make a decision on the Olympic Games on Tuesday (March 28, 2023), but despite heavy criticism it did open the door for Russian and Belarusian athletes to return to world sport. The IOC executive decided to allow the world federations the participation of previously banned athletes under certain conditions.
DOSB continues against the re-admission
The German Olympic Sports Confederation declared on Tuesday, “still against readmission” to be: “But we accept that with this attitude we belong to a minority in international sport.” It must “It is absolutely necessary to avoid that the regimes in Russia and Belarus can abuse the participation of their athletes in international sport for war propaganda purposes”. Only the coming months will show whether this is possible.
