iO Donna’s travels: hunting for camellias in Lucca

Hunting for Camellias with iO Donna

On this journey, from March 21st to 24thin the company of iO Donna journalist Justine Bellavita we will go to discover the magnificent varieties of the ancient camellias of Luccacrossing the architecture of Pisa and Lucca.

The first day we will treat ourselves to a suggestive walk in the magnificent complex of Campo dei Miracoli in Pisa with a visit to The Triumph of Deathmasterpiece by Buonamico Buffalmacco, returned to the monumental cemetery of Pisa after over seventy years of absence.

The next day from Lucca we will visit the neoclassical Villa Reale di Marlia, with its exciting park dotted with 40 varieties of Camellia japonica, with some of the most representative of the Lucca area. And then the Renaissance Villa Mansi, surrounded by splendid Italian gardens and, to follow, Villa Torrigiani, among terraces, fountains, statueshedge mazes, ornamental plants to be inspired by.

On the third day we will reach the villages of Pieve and Sant’Andrea di Compito, where we will visit the famous Camellietum and the XXXV Exhibition of the Ancient Camellias of Lucca. Their flowers, spectacular in color and variety, will captivate us.

Inebriated by such beauty, we will visit in the afternoon Palazzo Pfanner, historic residence from 1670and the next day the Medici villa of Poggio a Caiano commissioned by Lorenzo de’ Medici.
