“Io Capitano” with Matteo Garrone brings cinema to Senegal

Un journey together with the director Matteo Garrone and the actors of “Io Capitano”the Italian film set in Senegal nominated for the Oscar for best foreign film, to bring cinema to the schools, villages and suburbs of the country where the film was shot in the original language, and where cinema no longer exists or has never existed. In April a van equipped with the necessary equipment to set up a temporary cinema will travel the streets of the country, where the film was shot, with the aim of creating cultural connections and building bridges between different communities.

The initiative is entitled “I’M COMING TOO. I Captain in Senegal with Matteo Garrone. It was organized by Cinemovel Foundation a group of people who fto travel the cinema to contribute to the cultural, social and economic development of the places it passes through. Together they are also there organizations rooted in the territory active in involving young generations through cinema. The itinerary was built in collaboration with local organizations and NGOs working in Senegal. And today the network is made up of Acra, Amref Health Africa, Munus Foundation, Reggio Children Foundation, Ipsia. Filmed in Senegal in the Wolof language, the film “I Captain” can be sAccording to the organizers, it is a powerful tool for thinking with young people about the topic of migration.

And we can all contribute to finance this project, through a specific crowdfunding to support the initiative.

Travel, cinema and education

The itinerary develops along two directions, from Dakar to Thiès and in Casamance. Each stage includes a morning screening for schools and the evening screening for the whole community. The screen will be mounted at Thiès, Mboro, Kolda, Sédhiou and Ziguinchor suburbs of Dakar. The project is already underway here Dakar Reve for which Reggio Children Foundation e Ipsia they have been working since 2022 strengthen sustainability education in schools. The stages of the caravan will also involve the Sunugal vocational training school and the Gis Gis women’s cooperative which produces ethical fashion collections. Another stop on the outskirts of the capital, Rufisque, a center that brings together the young people of the neighborhood, with whom ACRA works in a program of civil participation of the young generations, where the film will be screened.

From Dakar to Thiès

After Dakar the traveling cinema reaches Thiès. The stop will be in the LANS city high school, in collaboration with Ipsia which for years has supported and accompanied theInterclub of Italian, a group of young people, passionate about the Italian language and culture, who actively participate in the project Lands and Freedom, international volunteering experience. From Thiès northwards, the traveling cinema caravan stops in Mboro. A bit of a homecoming for Cinemovel: from 2010 to 2014, together with the association Aprosem Mboro Senegalthe group realized Mboro Film Festival – the Community Festival forming a group of young people, who were left with the equipment, to continue with the activity.

Casamance stop

From Mboro we set off again for the region of Casamance and the traveling cinema will reach the communities where Amref Health Africa is present with specific activities for the younger generations. In the region of Sedhiouwill meet the girls from the project Girls.Choice.Futurewhile in the Kolda region he will discover the young activists of the project Power to Youth. Also in Casamance a Ziguinchorwith ACRA which promotes migration programs in particular, we will try to reach the local population with traveling cinema.

Cinemovel for Africa

Cinemovel began its adventure on the African continent in 2001 with the first pilot project of traveling cinema in Mozambique with an information campaign on AIDS. A special relationship with Senegal began in 2010, giving life to the Mboro Film Festilval, a community festival organized in a fishing village. From that moment on, the link with Senegal has never been interrupted and continues with an ambitious project that he recalls over time.
