Investigation of fatal accident with 3 Porsches on German highway shows: too high speed also cause | Abroad

The investigation by the German police into the traffic accident in which four Dutch people died on Sunday shows that too high a speed for the situation on the road was also one of the causes. Immediately after the accident and after an initial investigation on Monday, the police already concluded that the wet road surface had contributed to the accident on the A3 near Elten. The investigation into the accident has now been completed.

“The most likely cause is that the cars lost control due to aquaplaning and that they were driving too fast for the situation on the road,” said a police spokeswoman. In aquaplaning, there is so much water on the road that the tires lose contact with the road surface. The driver then loses control of the car. For example, the two crashed Porsches probably left the road.

The German Public Prosecution Service will decide on Thursday whether the cars will still be investigated. A criminal investigation will not be opened, “because there is no one to prosecute,” says the spokeswoman.

The four victims are three men aged 39, 42 and 56 and a 37-year-old woman. According to German police, the 42-year-old driver of a Porsche Cayman lost control and his car ended up in a ditch on the side of the road. The 37-year-old woman was also in the vehicle. The two managed to get out of the vehicle and stood on the side of the road. A 39-year-old man had stopped to provide assistance on the emergency lane.

Moments later, a 56-year-old Dutchman lost control of the wheel in a Porsche 911 on the same stretch of road. As a result, he hit the three people standing along the road and crashed into the guardrail, police said. The woman and the 39-year-old man succumbed to their injuries on the spot. Later, the two drivers also died. A co-driver in the second vehicle survived the accident by jumping over the crash barrier just in time.

All three cars were participants in a tour of supercars that went through the eastern Netherlands and a bit through Germany.
