The defense minister was allowed to return home the next day, but had to return on January 1 due to complications. The White House was informed on January 4 and Congress a day later. US President Joe Biden has only been informed since Tuesday.
Austin’s withholding of information about his illness for days has sparked a debate between Democrats and Republicans. The White House calls it a mistake, but President Joe Biden refuses to fire Austin.
