Investigation into ‘suspicious situation’ Emmer-Compascuum over, street open again

The police cordoned off Populierenlaan in Emmer-Compascuum for some time this morning. A spokesperson spoke of a ‘possibly suspicious situation’. Ultimately, there was no question of a dangerous situation. The barrier was subsequently removed.

The Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) was involved in the action. He inspected an area near the fish pond. Local residents wrote on social media about a suspicious package that was allegedly found.

According to a bystander, a pair of shoes was searched just in front of a parked car.

In the street, the vehicles of the police, fire brigade and the EOD caused quite a stir. “It has never been so busy here,” laughs a resident who lives near the suspicious location. His house overlooks the fishing pond where the package was found. “Around eight o’clock there was a lot of activity here. What did they find? A suitcase or something. There was nothing in it. It must have something to do with carnival.”

His neighbor returned home from work because of all the commotion. “My phone was ringing off the hook. ‘What happened to you?'” he explains. Once at his home, he was initially not allowed inside. “In the end, it turned out that nothing was wrong. I was allowed to enter my house again, provided I brought the officers a cup of coffee. Well, that’s what I did.”
