Investigation into fatal accident by wrong-way driver takes weeks

There were two fatalities in the accident on the A28 near Hooghalen last Saturday night. There, a wrong-way driver collided head on with an oncoming vehicle. The National Criminal Investigation Department is investigating the case and, according to a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service, this could take a few weeks.

The accident at Hooghalen happened around 00:40 in the night. The police received reports of a wrong-way driver driving south from Haren on the A28. The car seemed to stop at Assen, but when officers approached the car, the driver suddenly took off again, again against traffic. A chase ensued. The wrong-way driver collided head on at Hooghalen with the car of a driver from Leek. This 35-year-old woman did not survive the accident and the wrong-way driver, a 30-year-old Assenaar, also died.

Three other vehicles were involved in the accident. Five people in these cars were injured. It concerns a 67-year-old woman from Stadskanaal, a 68-year-old man from Stadskanaal, a 37-year-old woman from Musselkanaal, a 60-year-old man from Assen and a 52-year-old woman from Assen.

The National Criminal Investigation Department wants to be clear about what exactly happened and is also investigating the role of the police, which always happens when it comes to a chase.
