Inventor Roy develops Grand Prix flag without stick or holder: ‘Every house has a flag’

Roy Cats has been working on his new invention for about six months: a flag that does not require a flagpole or holder, but which you can attach to a window or door with suction cups. Roy is so enthusiastic that he has even applied for a patent.

But how does the flag actually work? “Very simple,” says Roy with the flag in his hand. “You hang it on the back of a window or a door. There are two suction cups on the back of the flag that you can tighten, with which you attach the flag.”

To test

In Zandvoort they like flags, especially during the Grand Prix. Ellen Koper and Angelique van der Vliet, two Formula 1 fans with a flag in the garden, will take a closer look at Roy’s flag.

At Angelique, the black and white checkered banner is attached to the front door. When it hangs, she pulls on it: “It hangs solid and it’s absolutely awesome. Yes, I do believe that people who can’t attach a flagpole to their house would want to use this flag.”

“If the wind blows hard, the flag will stay in place”

Ellen lives in the Van Speijkstraat, perhaps the Dutch Grand Prix street in Zandvoort, because they know how to have a good party during F1. Like many other houses, black and white checkered flags are fluttering outside her house.

Ellen does not have a flag holder and looks curious as Roy attaches the flag to her window. “This definitely seems like an alternative to me if you can’t use a flagpole for your house. I just checked and if the wind blows hard, it really stays put,” says Ellen.

Millions of flags?

Roy is happy that these people in Zandvoort have approved his invention. “I have the idea that it was received positively, people were enthusiastic.”

He’s not sure yet if he’s going to sell millions of flags now. “We have applied for a patent and in nine months we will hear whether this is unique in the world. That is just as exciting,” says Roy.
