Interview with Fahri Yardım: When he sings, there is nobody in the room

A conversation about “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, his singing skills – and potato animals.

With “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” the final part of the trilogy is now appearing in cinemas. Director James Gunn’s space saga about Peter Quill, called Starlord (played by Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Drax (Dave Bautista) and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) was initially considered the underdog among Marvel films when the first part was released in 2013, but quickly turned out to be a fan favorite with its unconventional humor and 80s soundtrack.

In “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” this time the raccoon Rocket is in the foreground of the story, which is spoken in the German dubbing by Fahri Yardım. We sat down with the 42-year-old actor to talk about the new film’s tragic and comic components, voice challenges, and the difference between verbal and non-verbal humor – all while inventing a new species of animal along the way.

Yardım says that he is very happy that his role is the focus of the film. He explains: “All this neurosis, all this anger suddenly gets a story. But I don’t just find it tragic – I find this balancing act so beautiful. I was half crying before I was laughing again. That they manage to weave the tragic and the comic together is really brilliant. I haven’t seen that in Marvel either.”

The main reason why dubbing is a challenge for him is that it brings up an “old euphoria” in him, he continues. “I really enjoyed that there is something that is not so routine for me. There’s that old euphoria again that has worn off a bit in acting. And this – I go in there, sweat, drink four bottles of water and I’m excited. That’s the bigger hurdle for me.”

Regarding the soundtrack, the Jerks actor also revealed that one of his favorite songs was used in the work — and he even got to sing it briefly. “It’s an all-time classic and one of my favorite songs,” says Yardım. “I’ve often played it at home, but after the first three notes there’s usually no one in the room.”

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” will be released in German cinemas on May 3rd.
