INTERVIEW. Sociologist Rudi Laermans on energy crisis: “If people have to work on their savings, we reach a critical point”

Many Flemish people are afraid. Afraid of a cold winter, afraid of the energy bill, afraid of an empty savings account. And all while the fear of a European war is still there and we have only just recovered from the danger that Covid-19 posed. What does this succession of terrifying crises do to us? Sociologist Rudi Laermans (KU Leuven), author of a book on collective fears, provides answers. “We are reaching the critical point when people have to use their savings, which were meant for their retirement or their children in college.”
