Internet tariffs have become more expensive for many providers

Many Internet providers have increased the price for new customers. However, you can save a lot if you have an older tariff and switch in good time.

Anyone who signs a new internet contract today often pays more for it than a year ago. A market analysis by the comparison portal Verivox shows that around every second Internet tariff from the major providers became more expensive in July 2023 compared to the same month last year. On average, the price increase is 7.38 euros per month. That’s an average of almost 90 euros more per year.

Around 50 percent of internal tariffs are more expensive

Specifically, there were price increases for 21 of 41 tariffs – providers that cover around 90 percent of the market were particularly affected. Inflation and the increased costs for network expansion and energy are cited as reasons. The new customer prices from Telekom, Vodafone, O2 and 1&1 were examined.

There were some increases, particularly for tariffs in the lower price segment. This is particularly problematic for those who already have fewer financial resources available.

Also interesting: 1&1 is also increasing prices for existing customers – who is affected

Those who have a longer contract usually get cheaper

Nevertheless, a price comparison can be worthwhile, especially if the internet contract has been in place for a long time. Because almost every second person (48 percent) could get a 24-month tariff taken out in 2021 from the same provider cheaper today – and sometimes with more services. Therefore the advice: check the contract regularly and check other offers so as not to pay unnecessarily.

Good to know: With internet contracts, you have a monthly right of termination after the minimum term, which is often twelve or 24 months – even with automatic contract extensions. The consumer advice centers point this out.

Also price increases for mobile communications

Not only have internet tariffs become more expensive, but a similar picture also emerges for mobile phone contracts: for new customers, the price level has increased significantly compared to 2022, reports Verivox. Not all providers have adjusted the price equally.

And here, too, there is potential for savings with older two-year tariffs: two thirds (66 percent) can be had cheaper today with the same provider than in 2021 – and there is almost always more value for money.
