International Trainer Congress: National coach Flick reveals his rescue plan for the European Championship in Bremen

National coach Hansi Flick was a guest in Bremen on Monday. In addition to the right position for Joshua Kimmich, it was also about unpleasant conversations that are coming up soon.

After the messed up World Cup last winter and the failed friendlies in June against Ukraine (3: 3), Poland (0: 1) and Colombia (0: 2), Hansi Flick has come under massive criticism. Nevertheless, the national coach took the time to visit the International Coaches Congress in Bremen on Monday. Here he spoke about the current situation and the plans for the European Championships, which will take place in Germany next year.

“Where there’s clapping, there’s also whistling,” said Flick about the current mood. After the bankruptcies in June, his dismissal had recently been increasingly called for. “The wind is coming strong,” admitted the 58-year-old. Among other things, he is accused of holding on to some players for too long. Especially those who once won six titles with him at Bayern Munich in one season. In addition, one or the other player might have already earned a nomination, but has not yet been considered.

Now the starting eleven for the EM should be found

“I think it’s very audacious to claim that the national team doesn’t invite players based on performance,” Flick replied. At the same time, he understands that those responsible for some clubs want to position their players. Malick Thiaw is one who has recently positioned himself all by himself. The central defender from AC Milan made his debut in the DFB team in June and apparently took his chance with the national coach. “He has shown what kind of path he is currently on,” praised Flick. “It shows that you can make such a development in such a short time.”

Thiaw was also used in his two games against Poland and Colombia in the back three, which was heavily criticized afterwards. “No matter what happens, we’ll pull it through,” said Flick, who was the motto when trying to use the three-man chain for the games in June. “Of course we didn’t think that the results would be so bad.” For the upcoming games against Japan (September 9) and France (September 12), he revealed that he will switch back to the back four. The focus is now clearly on bringing in a permanent team for the European Championship.

It was clear to us that starting in September we would start to find the core team and then let them get used to it. This means that one or the other conversation will take place in the coming weeks.

Play Kimmich again right-back?

This means that Flick will probably tell one or the other player that he no longer plays a role in the plans or that it will be difficult for him to get a place in the EM squad. “I’m convinced that we have enough difference players,” emphasized Flick. Joshua Kimmich can also be such a person. With him, Flick did not want to rule out the possibility that he would slip back from central midfield to the position of right-back.
