World Oceans Day: the importance of sustainable fishing for the future of the planet

1 – Why sustainable fishing is necessary

“The United Nations estimates that food systems must increase their productivity by 70 percent to satisfy a population growth that will exceed 9 billion people in 2050» explains Francesca Oppia, Director of the MSC Program in Italy «In this scenario, sustainable fisheries management can provide protein and nutrients to the millions of people suffering from nutrient deficiencies today or food insecurity.

Against world hunger

According to the United Nations, foods from aquatic systems, called Blue Foods (animals, plants and algae caught or grown in marine environments or fresh water) are fundamental allies in facing the challenge of global food security. According to research by Costello et al. (2016), published on Pnas, if all fisheries were well managed, would be able to produce 16 million more catches each year.” Here are some of the reasons identified by MSC.

Sustainable fishing could result in over 16 million additional catches per year.

2 – Because sustainable fishing is good for the environment

Fishing consumes very little land or water, nor does it require fertilizer or feed. The carbon footprint of wild-caught fish is one-tenth that associated with red meat. Some small fish, such as herring, mackerel and sprat, have lower carbon emissions than rice and corn.

3 – Because it’s an efficient way to eat

Fish and seafood are rich in nutrients such as zinc, iron, vitamins A and B12 and omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for human health. Oily fish such as salmon and herring contain more essential nutrients than nuts, grains, meat, leafy greens or seeds, which are more absorbed and utilized better than those contained in the same vegetables and dietary supplements.

4 – Because eating more variety is important

There are 2,200 species of fish caught and 600 of farmed fish, and yet most of us consume the same few species. Nevertheless, varying the species consumed relieves the pressure on the more common ones, helping to preserve biodiversityto.

5 – Because sustainable fishing protects jobs

Sustainable fishing also protects fishery workers who use virtuous methods.
