Progress in energy efficiency is not being made fast enough. This is what the International Energy Agency (IEA) says in a new report.
To make the energy sector emission-free by 2050, progress in energy efficiency must be much faster. An annual increase of more than 4 percent between now and 2030 is needed, the Energy Agency says.
However, the report shows that efficiency growth will remain at 1.3 percent in 2023. The European Union would end up at 5 percent, the United States at 4 percent.
Higher energy efficiency is crucial to keep global warming within the 1.5 degree target, says IEA director Fatih Birol. World leaders established this goal in Paris in 2015.
The Energy Agency notes that efficiency gains must be achieved consistently and broadly. “For example, a widespread switch to LED lighting in the United States would save enough energy to power 3 million electric vehicles per year or heat 2.6 million homes with heat pumps.”
