Justice and Security Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius and her British counterpart and Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab are organizing an international meeting on March 20 to support the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its investigations into international crimes, including the investigation in Ukraine. Justice ministers from all over the world will meet in London in March.

During the meeting, the ministers will discuss how the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court can be further assisted in this major task. This may include both financial and practical support, such as assistance in gathering information and gathering evidence of committed international crimes. In addition, consideration is being given to how witnesses can tell their story without further increasing the suffering through retraumatization.

Evidence of atrocities

It has been more than a year since Russia invaded Ukraine. Since then, a brutal war has been raging in Ukraine, crucial infrastructure has been attacked and people live in fear. Investigators continue to find evidence of atrocities that have taken place in reclaimed areas.

“The reports and images of Russia’s unlawful and unprovoked armed attack on Ukraine are horrific. It is crystal clear to us: these crimes must not go unpunished. At this meeting, we will work with our partners to ensure even greater support is provided to the ICC and the Ukrainian authorities.”

according to Yesilgoz-Zegerius.

Forensic investigation

The Netherlands already sent two forensic investigation teams to Ukraine in 2022 to collect evidence that can be used in investigations into crimes committed in the country. Those two teams operated under the banner of the International Criminal Court. Two additional missions are planned for this year.

The Netherlands also made a voluntary financial contribution of €2 million to the Trust Fund of the ICC Public Prosecution Service. In addition, personnel from the National Police and the Dutch Public Prosecution Service have been seconded to the ICC.

Conference

The conference will take place at Lancaster House in London and will be co-chaired by Yesilgöz-Zegerius and Raab. Ministers from at least 30 countries will be present. The conference will conclude with a press conference.
