BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – In view of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the German interior ministers are discussing the distribution of refugees with EU representatives this Thursday in Brussels. Interior Commissioner Ylva Johansson, Deputy Commission President Margaritis Schinas, the Deputy Director of Europol, Jürgen Ebner, and the Director of the border protection agency Frontex, Fabrice Leggeri, are expected to attend the special conference of interior ministers of the federal and state governments in the Belgian capital, which was planned before the war .
The interior ministers of the federal states are demanding a fair distribution of refugees – not just from Ukraine, as IMK chairman, Bavarian interior minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) said. However, it was not initially clear what exactly was behind it.
As a result of the large number of refugees in 2015 and 2016, the EU states fought bitterly for years about a mandatory quota for the distribution of those seeking protection in the EU. This is one of the reasons why a reform of the common asylum and migration policy failed.
Other topics discussed by the interior ministers are the consequences of the war on the general security situation, protection against cyber attacks and improving civil protection. The conference started on Wednesday afternoon and the results are to be presented at a press conference in Brussels on Thursday (12.30 p.m.)./had/DP/ngu
