It has been a tumultuous few weeks for the SEW handball players. After the sudden resignation of head coach Arthur Langedijk and the departure of interim pope Rick Boonkamp, Jeroen Smits has now been brought forward to bring the Nibbixwouders’ season to a good end. “It is now first time to bring back the peace and enjoy the game again,” says Smits.
After Langedijk’s departure, it was announced that the trio Rik Boonkamp, Jeroen Smits and Theo Bakker would finish the season together. After Boonkamp called it quits after one game, it is now Smits’ turn for the last five games of the season. “We have had a good conversation with the selection and there is mutual trust to bring the season to a good end together,” said Smits. “Everything that has happened has been drawn and we have to look forward again.”
Objective
Despite the troubled situation, SEW is still in the fight for a European ticket for next season. “To be honest, that is not the first objective at the moment. We first want to regain confidence within the group. We have to put our shoulders to the wheel together.”
Next season will Michael Vijverberg standing in front of the group of the club from the West Frisian Nibbixwoud. Smits plans to transfer the selection to the new trainer as best as possible. “These girls are really good at handball. It is important that they get the fun back in the game and that they trust each other. In June the trainer must be able to start with a clean slate.”
SEW’s first game with Smits at the helm is on Saturday 23 April. SEW will then play a home game against fellow provincial Volendam. Last week SEW lost 30-29 to the handball players from the fishing village.
