Inter Milan have won the Italian Super Cup for the third time in a row.
The second-placed Serie A team successfully defended its title again with a 1-0 (0-0) win against champions SSC Napoli in the sold-out Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh. After winning their eighth title overall, the Nerazzurri still need another cup success to catch up with record winners Juventus Turin.
A goal from world champion Lautaro Martinez only decided the game in stoppage time (90+1), the assist was provided by former Bayern player Benjamin Pavard. Napoli were outnumbered from the 60th minute onwards after Giovanni Simeone was shown a yellow-red card.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi also celebrated another personal success with the win. The former professional became the sole record holder with his fifth triumph in the competition, which has been held since 1988.
Before the start of the second half, the Italian idol Gigi Riva was remembered with a minute’s silence in the Saudi capital. According to his family, the national team’s record goalscorer died on Monday at the age of 79 as a result of a heart attack.
