Inter, transfer market: Thuram’s idea was born from Dybala’s mistake

The Nerazzurri regretted not signing Joya. Now they want to avoid repeating the mistake

Why Thuram in January? Inter’s transfer market move, engaged in an attempt to snatch the French striker from Bayern six months before his expiry date, hides a strategy determined by a recent mistake: the renunciation of Dybala. A controversial decision, that; a choice that burned the club and left some aftermath in internal relations. Zhang’s initial enthusiasm for the possible arrival of the former Juventus player at zero, which then turned into hesitation; pressure from Inzaghi not to shelve Correa; the anger of Marotta, who had created the conditions for taking Paulo by convincing him to wait for the final assent.

Regret

A few weeks after that “no, we won’t take you”, reversing the Joya had already turned into regret. So much so that – beyond the injury that kept him out in the last period in Rome – many at Inter are convinced that the standings would have a different aspect if Dybala had arrived in Milan. Not only that: it is also sure that Paulo’s signing would have prompted another striker to leave, with consequent economic savings. In short, no redundancies would have been created among the attackers, as some feared (or said they feared) at the time.

Occasion

What does Thuram have to do with Dybala? Simple: Inter don’t want to have the same regrets as last summer. Today, Lilian’s son is an opportunity: if he stays at Borussia Moenchengladbach until June, when he can go free, Bayern will have an advantage over the Nerazzurri. Which, not surprisingly, is trying to anticipate the times, convincing him to move as early as January. At that point, Inter’s managers could manage their extended attack with serenity, starting from a position of strength: they wouldn’t need to hire another striker, on the contrary they would consider giving up a striker among those in the squad. In short, they could move as they would have liked to do in the summer if they had taken Dybala.

Sacrificed

The name of the sacrificed possible is not sure. Probably, if given the choice, the Nerazzurri would get rid of Correa: but what market can a forward have who hardly ever scores and is often injured? Moreover, the Tucu is budgeted for a figure of around 25 million: another obstacle to the sale. There are also doubts about Lukaku. First of all, Chelsea’s position: who knows if he will confirm his intention to renew his loan to Inter. Then there is an assessment that belongs to the Nerazzurri company, relating to the physical reliability of the Belgian also in relation to a fabulous signing. The Dzeko question is less relevant: he plays a lot and well, scores, convinces, so much so that Inter would like to renew his contract. The position of Lautaro remains in the background – but not protected from surprises in the event of a monstrous offer. The fact is that the attack department of Inter is restless. Since the year (of grace) of Conte’s championship, it has been a continuous coming and going. In 2021 out Lukaku with Pinamonti, in Dzeko and Correa; a year later Sanchez sold, Romelu recovered. Now we are traveling towards another revolution, another turnaround. And to think that, in recent seasons, the Nerazzurri have always been among the two best in the league for goals scored, let alone if they hadn’t even scored.
