Loan & Obligation to Buy from Atalanta
Robin Gosens plays in Serie A for a club from Lombardy with black and blue jerseys – but in the future this will no longer apply to Atalanta, but to Inter Milan. Both clubs have officially confirmed the transfer of the 27-year-old German international. Gosens will initially move to the Nerazzurri on loan until 2023, after which there will be a mandatory purchase option if certain conditions are met, according to the club. A working paper is then waiting for the left winger until 2026.
Inter makes Gosens the most expensive entry for a German footballer in Serie A history with the transfer. According to media reports, the purchase obligation is 25 million euros plus possible bonuses, which should reach a total of 28 million. That was Atalanta’s initial demand, where the contract of the dangerous left foot, which originally ran until 2023, had previously been extended. In the rich history of German professionals in the Italian upper house, Mario Gómez, who switched from FC Bayern to AC Florenz for €15.5m in 2013/14, has taken the top spot.

At the same time, only two departures in Atalanta’s history were more expensive: Dejan Kulusevski (35 million to Juventus) and Alessandro Bastoni (31.1 million to Inter). Inter, meanwhile, paid 15 times the fee for a new signing. In the ranking of the most expensive German players in football history, Gosens is in 21st place behind Nico Schulz (25.5 million to BVB) and level with a quartet around Julian Brandt and Toni Kroos.
Inter new signing Robin Gosens: Outstanding development at Atalanta
Gosens, who was also interested in Newcastle United, is leaving Atalanta after 157 games, 29 goals and 21 assists in five and a half years. In recent years, the native of Emmerich has made an outstanding development in coach Gian Piero Gasperini: The winger, who has never played professionally in Germany, blossomed into a largely unknown newcomer from Heracles Almelo in the summer of 2017, not only to become a regular in Gasperini’s intensive 3-5 run -2, but also recommended himself for the DFB-Elf through strong performances in the Champions League, for which he has been used 13 times since September 2020, including at the European Championships in summer 2021.
BEAT THE PRO – Robin GOSENS vs. Transfermarkt (Quiz & Interview)
In the past few months, however, Gosen’s Atalanta had been absent due to a serious thigh injury, and it is also unclear when he will be able to intervene in the game at Inter. The transfer is therefore already seen as an anticipation of the new season. “Two players on the left could leave coach Simone Inzaghi’s team due to expiring contracts,” says Jatin Dietl, Area Manager Transfermarkt IT. “It’s almost certain for Aleksandar Kolarov and there’s no agreement on an extension with Ivan Perisic, who’s having a very strong season. Only homegrown Federico Dimarco remained for this exhausting position. Gosens is a perfect match for Inzaghi as a counterpart to Denzel Dumfries on the right because of his offensive strength.”

In the Inter-Forum at Transfermarkt, the news of the Gosens transfer is mostly, if not by everyone, happily received. For example, “Interista1988” writes: “Well, I don’t understand how some here are critical of Gosens’ commitment … The man was one of the best LM/LV in Europe in the last two seasons! He managed 17 scorers in 32 and 34 league games respectively! I don’t believe that after his injury he can no longer be the ‘old man’. For me he is the perfect counterpart to Dumfries! Both with identical attributes. In addition, both flanks can hit! To be honest, I’m thrilled about this surprising signing!”
