Inter, Inzaghi as Conte, Mancini and Spalletti: the start of the year

Inzaghi’s team is experiencing a crisis of results after the break: last year at this point of the season the Nerazzurri started the escape, but in the past they have often struggled during this period

Two victories out of seven in the league since the beginning of 2022. At home Inter January and February are to be deleted, with a return from holidays that is anything but soft: the season has become more complicated than expected, the imperative for the Nerazzurri is to immediately reverse the trend. And in those parts it is not the first time, considering the recent past, that in the first months of the new year the performance drops dramatically: it happened with Mancini, Spalletti and even in the first year of Conte, while last season Inter the arrow in this period.

With Conte

In February 2022, Inter ended with two points in four league games, with the Champions League almost compromised after Liverpool’s 2-0 at San Siro and with only one success, in the Italian Cup against Roma. In this same period, last year the Nerazzurri won in the league against Fiorentina, Lazio, Milan and Genoa, a row that gave the impetus to the definitive escape to the tricolor. But also Conte, in his first year on the Inter bench, had to face a complicated period at the beginning of the new year: from 11 to 26 January 2020 the Nerazzurri drew three games in a row against Atalanta, Lecce and Cagliari and then lost against Lazio and Juventus after winning against Udinese and Milan. Two wins in seven days, before the stop due to the lockdown.

Spalletti and Mancini

Many Nerazzurri fans lived that period as a curse, as a story destined to repeat itself indefinitely. In the two previous years, with Luciano Spalletti, things had gone more or less the same way: in 2017/18 the Nerazzurri crisis even lasted from 9 December to 3 February, with six draws and two defeats in the eight games played; the following year, in the first seven games after the break, Inter won only twice. And even in Mancini’s 2015/16 season, the Nerazzurri had a strong start but then braked sharply after the break, to which Inter had arrived as leaders despite the last home defeat against Lazio: victory in Empoli on 6 January , then four unsuccessful games and two wins in nine games. At the end of February, the Nerazzurri found themselves fifth in the standings. The year of the Scudetto broke the curse, now Inter has resumed the negative trend: the imperative, around Appiano, is to immediately close the crisis. Also because everything is still open.
