Despite an early goal from Robin Gosens, Inter Milan have suffered their next setback in Italy’s Serie A. After the last three league bankruptcies in a row, the Lombards at US Salernitana did not get more than 1-1 (1-0) despite a dominant performance for a long time. The hosts equalized through Antonio Candreva (90th) only shortly before the end.
With the first chance of the game, Gosens had put the reigning cup winners in the lead: the German national player converted a headball extension from Storm Tank Romelu Lukaku, which is worth seeing (6th). As a result, Inter failed to add a second goal – and were punished for it.
The fourth-placed side has now been waiting for a win for six competitive games and missed going into the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League on Tuesday at Roger Schmidt’s Benfica Lisbon.
Meanwhile, SSC Napoli celebrated a successful, albeit two unconvincing dress rehearsal for the premier class at half-time. Without his injured top striker Victor Osimhen, the leaders won 2-1 (1-0) at newly promoted US Lecce, but benefited from a slapstick own goal by Lecce’s Antonino Gallo (64′).
In the previous week, Napoli suffered a rough 4-0 defeat against AC Milan, but now there is a quick chance for revenge on Wednesday: In the Champions League, SSC is playing Milan in the first leg of the Italian quarter-finals.
Milan, on the other hand, failed to gain self-confidence before the European Cup cracker. With ex-Schalke player Malick Thiaw in the starting XI, the champions had to settle for a meager 0-0 draw against struggling FC Empoli, but still managed to defend third place in the table ahead of their Milan city rivals. In the past six competitive games, Milan have only won against Napoli.
