Inter-Benfica and the previous one in the final: Herrera against Eusebio in 1965

27 May 1965, the reigning champions Nerazzurri challenge the Black Pearl: slides from a night that made the history of San Siro

Milan May 27, 1965, Herrera’s Inter – reigning European champions – faces the wonderful Benfica, who reached their fourth final in five years. It rained all day, the San Siro field is soaked. Everyone expects a memorable final – because there’s nothing around comparable to Inter and Benfica – but instead a sobbing match comes out, broken up in ambitions, decided by a fortuitous circumstance. It is the triumph of Grande Inter, the most sensational team of the 60s. Jack Kerouac writes in “On the road”: “Then came spring, the best time to travel”. That – in the spring of 1965 – is the Route 66 of the Magician’s Inter.
