Makeup artist Aino-Sofia Kojonen provides step-by-step tips for achieving intense and long-lasting eye makeup.
Tip 1: Before that, however, Kojonen wants to remind you that she always prefers brown shades in mascara or kajal, because the color black is too strong for many.
– Brown colors give an equally intense impression, but are always softer and more natural, and easier to fade.
Here’s how to create long-lasting eye makeup:
1. Prime the moving lid with concealer. For application, you can use your fingers or a synthetic brush.
– The skin on the moving eyelid is often greasy, so with a good primer you can make the eye makeup last, Kojonen reminds.
Apply the primer all the way to the lash line. Be careful and remember to be calm also in the inner and outer corner of the eye.
Tip 2: To clean caked-on eye makeup, you should use a makeup sponge or brush instead of a cotton swab.

2. Apply eyeshadow
The best brush for applying eyeshadow is a natural bristle brush with a round head.
Tip 3: Take eyeshadow from the palette with a brush. Rub excess color from the brush onto the back of your hand. Only then apply the eye shadow on the eyelid.
If you do the entire lid with one same color, fade the color towards the lid furrow. Finish with a softer, larger brush that moves over the lid in a hazy manner.
– A beginner’s mistake is often to apply too much eye shadow at once. It’s easier to add than to subtract, the make-up artist reminds.
If you add contour or eyeshadow to the lower lid as well, first prime the area with concealer and powder. The lower lid requires precise work, so use a small-ended brush here.
Tip 4: Dark eyeshadow in the crease brings depth and three-dimensionality to the look. The dark doesn’t have to be hard black, it can be reddish, purple and brown, which looks softer.

3. Add kajal to the upper and lower part of the eyelid
You can create an intense look by adding kajal to the upper and lower part of the eyelid.
4. Curl the eyelashes and add mascara
Curl the eyelashes and add mascara to every single lash. Note the upper and lower lashes.
