Institute of Tropical Medicine: “Ancient smallpox vaccine protects against monkeypox”

The old vaccine against smallpox, also called variola, protects against the monkeypox virus. That is what Dr. Patrick Soentjens of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) says on Friday. The Danish pharmaceutical manufacturer Bavarian Nordic has had an effective vaccine against monkeypox for a few years now, but only the federal government can order a stock.
