The Russian Embassy in Washington commented on the statement by Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland that Moscow organized the leak of a document with US and NATO responses to Russian proposals for security guarantees. Similar statements are confusing, Russian diplomats wrote on the social network Facebook.
The embassy noted that Nuland bases his accusations on the fact that there were some notes in the document “supposedly intended for Russia.”
“It can just as well be assumed that the Americans themselves made a copy of the document with ‘notes’, which was eventually handed over to the journalists,” the Russian diplomats stressed.
Russian diplomats recalled that the document was leaked through the Spanish newspaper El Pais. Spain is a member of NATO and a close ally of the United States, the embassy said in a statement.
“Instead of focusing on the essence of Russian concerns, the American side is engaged in conspiracy theories,” the embassy said.
Diplomats urged the United States to get down to serious work on discussing Russian security proposals in Europe.
