The changes to Instagram, which made the social medium more like TikTok, are on hold for the time being. According to Mosseri, Instagram should “take a big step back”.
Meta’s social medium announced earlier this month that the main timeline would be changed. Users would see more videos and photos suggested by algorithms. The images can come from both accounts that are followed and accounts that are not followed by the user.
The changes were not to the liking of many users and an online appeal “not to turn Instagram into TikTok” quickly went viral. Popular Instagrammers such as Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, each good for more than 300 million followers, joined the criticism. “We just want to see cute pictures of our friends,” the message read.
Mosseri responded to that criticism earlier this week by saying it was just a test that would be slowly rolled out. In the interview with platformer he comes back from that and says most of the changes will be undone.
‘It is important to fail every now and then’
“I am satisfied with the risk we have taken,” said Mosseri, who emphasizes that “it is important to fail every now and then”.
The boss of the platform understands that users were frustrated by the changes, which is also apparent from the user data, according to Mosseri. The social medium has learned a lot from that, he says. “Now we have to figure out how to proceed and come back with a new idea.”
This week it became clear that the revenue of Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has fallen in the second quarter. That was the first time for the American social media company, which has to deal with competition from TikTok, among others.
