Insider parties want to avoid government breakup in Italy

ROME (Reuters) – In Italy, some parties are trying to avoid a collapse of the governing alliance, according to insiders.

Negotiations were underway as to how the confidence vote scheduled for Thursday on an economic stimulus package in the Senate could be circumvented, party circles said. There are considerations that the package as a whole should not be voted on, but individual articles, said two people familiar with the considerations. But that also means that the 5-Star Movement is withdrawing demands that it made a condition for remaining in the coalition. The economic stimulus package is intended to support families and companies in overcoming the energy crisis.

If the 5-Star Movement did not participate in the vote, as announced, the government would not have a majority. The result would be a break in the coalition under Prime Minister Mario Draghi. Since February 2021, Draghi has led the governing coalition, which ranges from the left to the far right, as an independent.
