Inside or outside the norm: there are so many social rental homes in Zoetermeer

Zoetermeer is full of parks, offices, shops and of course homes. Part of the latter is social housing. Do you have any idea how big this share is?

In 2021, 33.9 percent of the homes in Zoetermeer were social housing, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. The city therefore meets the standard. In every municipality, at least 30 percent of the total housing supply must be social housing. That is a government rule.

Highest Grades

Nationally, last year 34 percent of the number of homes was social housing. Relatively speaking, the municipalities that have the most houses of this type are Groningen, Vlaardingen, Heerlen, Delft, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. But surrounding municipalities such as The Hague, Leiden, Schiedam and Vlaardingen also score above the standard. The municipalities of Pijnacker-Nootdorp, Lansingerland and Zoeterwoude do not meet the standard.

Difference with private rent

The figures in this article are about rental housing in the social sector. These are houses in Zoetermeer that cost a maximum of 763.47 euros per month and are owned by housing associations. There is no upper limit for private rented homes, which means that Zoetermeer residents often pay more.

More social housing in Zoetermeer

In the coming years, there will be more social rental homes in Zoetermeer and the surrounding area. This is because 900,000 homes must be added in the Netherlands before 2030, of which 250,000 must become social rental homes. In the province of South Holland, this will involve 235,460 additional houses. It is still unclear how many houses will be involved in Zoetermeer, but it is known that part of these are social housing.
