EU law on uniform chargers is forcing Apple to make changes.

In the EU in particular, the goal of introducing a law on so-called universal chargers, ie requiring device manufacturers to include a USB-C connection in their portable devices, has been strongly pursued. The exception would be smaller devices, such as smart watches, for which the USB-C port is too large. Switching to a universal charger common to all would reduce the amount of electronic waste and make it easier to charge equipment.
The European Parliament’s Office in Finland said in a statement in early May that “MEPs hope that the EU Commission will have a strategy by the end of 2026 to make the various wireless charging methods compatible”.
If the bill goes through, it would have a big impact, especially on Apple, which uses its own Lightning interface on its phones.
Now Bloomberg has received new information that Apple is testing new iPhone phones and chargers with a USB-C connection. This is by no means special, as the USB-C connection is familiar from Apple’s new laptops as well as iPads.
According to Bloomberg sources, Apple is testing an adapter that will allow future Iphone phones to work with existing accessories with a Lightning connector. This indicates that Apple is also introducing USB-C connections in its phones. For the next Iphone, the changes will probably not be seen yet, but according to Bloomberg at the earliest in 2023.
