In the game against Mainz 05, Alphonso Davies is back in Munich’s starting eleven. But then there is a momentous scene early on.
A very bitter comeback for Alphonso Davies. The FC Bayern defender had recently missed four games due to a strained medial ligament and was sorely lacking in defense for the German record champions. The 23-year-old was supposed to celebrate his return on matchday 25 against FSV Mainz 05, and coach Thomas Tuchel put him straight back into the starting line-up. But the joy didn’t last long. Instead, there was a moment of shock early in the game against the 05ers – with serious consequences for Davies.
The 15th minute in the Allianz Arena: Davies goes into an aerial duel with Mainz midfielder Silvan Widmer – and unfortunately gets his opponent’s foot right in the face. The Canadian remains lying down and referee Patrick Ittrich interrupts the game. Davies is treated immediately – he is badly marked, has a bloody lip and also appears slightly dazed. After three minutes it is already clear: He can’t go any further. Bayern have to play briefly outnumbered before Raphaël Guerreiro comes on.
And Alphonso Davies’ comeback was already over after 18 minutes of play. It is still unclear whether the defender will be out again.
Only a short time later there was the next shocking moment in the game, this time on the other side: Joshua Guilavogui unfortunately hit his head on teammate Anthony Caci’s knee during a duel in midfield in the 33rd minute – and even remained unconscious for a short time lay. After a moment, however, the Frenchman came to his senses and wanted to continue playing. But Mainz’s medical department quickly decided: it wasn’t possible and Guilavogui had to go out to be on the safe side. Edimilson Fernandes came into the game for him.
