In the Rome Open Tennis Tournament, world number 1 Polish Iga Swiatek withdrew from the match with Kazakh racket Elena Rybakina during the quarter-finals due to injury and said goodbye to the tournament.
The tournament, which was held for the 80th time this year on clay courts at the Foro Italico Complex in the capital city of Rome, continued with quarter-finals in the women’s singles and men’s singles categories.
Swiatek, the world number 1 in women and the champion of the Rome Open for the last 2 years, won the first set 6-2 in her fight against her Kazakh rival Rybakina, and lost the second set 7-6(3) leading to a tie break. Swiatek, who was injured in the final set when the situation was 2-2, could not continue the match and withdrew from the field. Thus, Rybakina reached the semi-finals of the Rome Open.
In the other quarter-final match played today in the women’s singles category, Latvian Jelena Ostapenko defeated Spanish racquet Paula Badosa 6-2, 4-6 and 6-3 in three sets, and reached the semi-finals.
In the men’s singles 4th seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud became the semi-finalist by beating Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo 2-0 in the quarter-finals after two sets of 7-6(5) and 6-4.
In the first match of the day, the reigning champion of the Rome Open, world number 1 Serbian Djokovic, was defeated by 7 seeded Danish Holger Rune 2-1 and bid farewell to Rome.
