Injury forces Karin and horse Zula to stop hunebed tour: ‘The best choice for now’

In the absence of other holiday plans and as a pleasant pastime, Karin Olfert (29) decided to visit all 53 public dolmens in Drenthe and Groningen with her horse. In the journey of about 300 kilometers, almost half of all dolmens had been ticked off, but a sudden injury to loyal four-legged friend Zula has now firmly put an end to the continuation.

Not that Zula is in the rag basket, because walking is still possible. But the tens of kilometers that are covered every day are starting to weigh heavily. “There’s not much wrong, but when I took her out of the meadow, I saw something that looked like a swelling. Other than that, she wasn’t walking well anymore.”

It is still a guess as to how the defect arose, but Zula could have stumbled. “You can drive on, but I don’t want to make it worse,” explains Karin. “Yesterday she also covered 35 kilometers, longer than intended. Thanks to a closure on the route, a large part had to be asphalted. And those are monotonous movements,” she fears for the horse’s physical condition.

RTV Drenthe made the report below at the start of the hunebed tour.
