The national government in The Hague must come up with a permanent solution for the reception of refugees. Always temporary solutions such as now, where asylum seekers have to move every few weeks, are inhumane. The Laarbeek city council writes this in a letter to the State Secretary for Justice and Security.
The reason for the letter is the decision to temporarily accommodate 115 asylum seekers in the music center of Beek en Donk from 14 September to 1 October. They come from Deurne, where there is no place for them anymore.
“When the Brabant-Southeast Security Region asked our municipal council to provide temporary shelter for 115 refugees next month, we as a municipal council have agreed to this for humanitarian reasons. We do this with mixed feelings, because we realize that a succession of temporary solutions is inhumane for the refugees involved,” the letter reads.
Structural solution
The municipal councilors state that social support for reception is declining in Laarbeek. “This can only be countered by a structural solution for regulating the influx and reception of refugees. The municipality of Laarbeek or any other Dutch municipality cannot come up with that solution.”
The Hague must come to a lasting solution together with the Europe, says the city council. “That is also the reason that we send you this cry from the heart.”
The letter was signed by all six council factions and mayor Frank van der Meijden. “As a municipality, we support the letter.”
