Inflation rises again to 11.6 percent in July after previous decline | Financial

This is reported by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Annual inflation was 11.6%, compared to 9.9% in May. As a result, inflation remains at a very high level, fueled by increased energy prices and higher food prices.

After the 11.7% increase in consumer prices in March, inflation gradually decreased somewhat in April, May and June. The statistical office reports the figures using the European harmonized method, which was created to enable a good comparison of inflation data from different European countries.

Statistics Netherlands will later publish the monthly inflation figure according to its own calculation method. This includes keeping track of housing costs, such as rents. The European method does not take this into account. In June this inflation amounted to 8.6% compared to a year earlier. In May it was still 8.8%.

Retail

Turnover in the Dutch retail sector rose by 0.4% in June compared to a year earlier, CBS reports. This was mainly due to higher prices, as the sales volume was 6.3% lower.

The stores in food, beverages and tobacco managed to achieve 4.7% more turnover. However, the sales volume was 4.7% lower than a year earlier. The turnover of the specialty stores was 3.5% higher and the turnover of the supermarkets rose 4.9%.

Non-food and online

According to Statistics Netherlands, turnover in the non-food sector shrank by 3%, with a volume decline of 8%. Drugstores were able to convert more in June than a year ago. Stores in consumer electronics and white goods, furniture and home furnishings, leisure and DIY items, kitchens and floors saw sales decline. This also applied to the shops in shoes and leather goods and the shops in clothing.

Online sales in June were 6.5% lower than in the same month a year ago. Webshops converted 7.1% less. The online turnover of shops selling via the internet as an ancillary activity shrank by 5.9%. The online turnover of food and drug stores in June was slightly higher than twelve months previously, while the turnover of the other sub-sectors declined.
