Inflation remains high in April, partly due to rising food prices

Inflation in the Netherlands was 9.6 percent in April. That appears from Tuesday published figures of the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). These figures are based on the Dutch consumer price index. Compared to March, there is a slight decrease: then inflation was still 9.7 percent.

Energy prices rose slightly less rapidly last month than in March, but they remain high. In April, energy was 136 percent more expensive than a year earlier. In March that was still 157 percent. Increasingly expensive energy — fueled by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — continues to make a “major contributor” to high inflation, according to CBS.

Rising food prices also mean that money in the Netherlands is worth less than a year ago. Foods cost 8.5 percent more in April than last year, up from a 6.2 percent difference in March. Rising gas and grain prices for bakers, farmers and supermarkets are largely passed on to the consumer.
